Masses for Gay activists

Current status: local responses are best. For example:

Mass was celebrated for Birmingham Quest in St Catherine of Siena, Bristol Street, Birmingham, 18th December 2005, for the 30th Anniversary of the local group; further Masses were arranged for 14th Jan, 11th March, and 9th April.

Mass was celebrated for the Leicester and East Midlands Quest in Holy Cross, Leicester, 18th Feb 2006.

A monthly Mass is said for Quest in the Archdiocese of Westminster. Fr Jim Kennedy, the diocesan priest with responsibility for the pastoral care of homosexuals, allows Quest to use his own parish hall for meetings and parties.

See the CDF document at the end of this post.

"The dissenting homosexual group 'Quest' that operates in the United Kingdom, under the Chairmanship of national broadcaster and journalist Mark Dowd, is becoming more active and gaining support from bishops and priests around the country. Various Masses, private and public, are regularly being celebrated for this group across the UK in spite of its open dissent from Catholic teaching. Nationwide, there are seven local Quest groups. Inspired by the success of the RCCLGCM Masses in the Westminster Archdiocese, Quest members are now seeking to have public Masses in Catholic churches, and appear to be having some measure of success. "(CFNews)

Quest has been excluded from listing in the Catholic Directory since 1998. For a taste of Quest's approach, see their Statement from Quest regarding the Vatican Document on Admission of Gay Men to Seminaries and Holy Orders

24th November 2005

"Same-sex attraction, whether it be in women or men, is once again dismissed by this text as being 'objectively disordered', a phrase that appeared in the 1986 document written at the time by the then Cardinal Ratzinger. It confirms that the Church pastors have failed to listen to the voices of modern medicine, science and psychology, which does not see the homosexual state in such pathological terms. Lesbians and gay men are not accepted for who they are, but are condemned by such language to be seen as merely ‘defective heterosexuals’, rather than evidence of a strand of love and commitment which is at the heart of God’s pluralistic creation."

Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 'The Pastoral Care of the Homosexual Person', 1986: (See here for the full text.)

17: 'All support should be withdrawn from any organisations which seek to undermine the teaching of the Church, which are ambiguous about it, or which neglect it entirely. Such support, or even the semblance of such support, can be gravely misinterpreted. Special attention should be given to the practice of scheduling religious servicds and to the use of Church buildings by these groups, including the facilities of Catholic schools and colleges. To some, such permission to use Church property may seem only just and charitable; but in reality it is contradictory to the purpose for which these institutions were founded, it is misleading and often scandalous...'

Holy Days of Obligation

Update: the petition has been sent to Rome, with 3008 entries (representing a greater number of people). Nearly 10% of this is represented by the online version; the rest was collected manually. Congratulations to Miss Vaughan-Spruce for her campaign, which Catholic Action UK was proud to support. Details of any official response will be posted here in due course.

The Liturgy Office of the Bishops' Conference

"According to the Catholic Herald's Rome correspondent, Edward Penna, the Vatican is encouraging anyone opposed to changes to the Holy Days of Obligation to make their case directly to Rome. 'Such criticism needs to be taken seriously, so it would be a help for such complaints to be made directly to the Holy See', said one official, speaking anonymously. Objections should be sent to the Congregation for Bishops." CFNews

Letter to the Catholic Herald (Aug 11 2006), from Mr Frank Swarbrick: '... The Catholic Union of Great Britain, that most respected group of faithful Catholics, should be applauded for considering "an appeal" against the bishops' decision. Many ordinary Catholics are looking for somebody to take a lead. May we now hope that the Catholic Union will be at the forefront of this discussion and we shall have the opportunity to speak.'

Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Current status: see update.

The highest part of the European Union, the Council of Ministers, will vote this coming Monday (24th July) on whether to fund the killing of human embryos for so-called research purposes.

The vote will determine whether the EU will allocate 2 billion euros for human cloning, embryonic stem cell research and other unethical types of experimentation which abuse and
destroy embryonic children and which exploit women.

On major issues such as budget decisions, the EU operates what is known as a 'co-decision' procedure, which involves the EU Commission, the European Parliament and the
Council of Ministers. Monday's vote is the last act of a co-decision procedure.

Update:

Ministers from member states of the European Union have recommended that funding for research using embryonic stem cells should continue, but not for the actual harvesting of embryonic stem cells, which is directly destructive of the embryo. The European Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik proposed the compromise, which won support from Germany, Italy and Slovenia - countries which had opposed earlier funding schemes. Austria, Lithuania, Malta, Poland and Slovakia voted maintained their opposition to the proposals.. The decision must now be confirmed by the European Parliament. [BBC News, 24 July]

About us

This is a new project (Summer 2006) to assist the defence of the Catholic Church and morality in the United Kingdom.

Many organisations exist to defend morality in the areas of abortion and euthanasia. In addition to these, there are a number of Catholic news services, which draw attention to issues such as Catholic education, sacrilegious programming by British broadcasters, and so on.

The need we have identified is not to duplicate the research carried out by these organisations, but to bring selected parts of this flow of news to a wider public. The parts we aim to select are those about which ordinary citizens can do something, usually by making a written protest (or note of encouragement). Once we have 'posted' on a news item, it becomes far more easily accessible for searches (through Google or the blog search box in the top left-hand corner) than most of our sources' archives are.

This is not a hopeless cause! The BBC's 'Popetown' cartoon series, which ridiculed the Holy See, was not broadcast, as a result of public outcry. An advertising campaign for the 'morning after' pill, with the slogan 'Immaculate Conception?', was withdrawn, following 185 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority. The threat to force Catholic schools to admit 25% non-Catholic pupils, and the 'Joffe' euthanasia bill, were both defeated in Parliament thanks to lobbying by Catholics. Where similar protests have failed, it is usually because there were not enough of them.

So join our alerts list! Send your address to: catholicactionuk@gmail.com

The interest of this site is Catholic: the defence of the Catholic Church, and morality as understood by the Catholic Church. Most issues we are concerned about fall under three broad headings:
1. The actions of the British state and its organs, and the European Union, in relation to abortion, contraception, medical research on human stem cells, euthanasia, and education.
2. The activities of private persons and firms in insulting God, the person of Jesus Christ, His saints and His Church.
3. The activities of Catholic priests and bishops, who need our support, and if necessary criticism, in their response to the crisis of morality in society, and in their government of the Church.

We are happy to collaborate with non-Catholic groups to further these goals, and non-Catholics are welcome to join our mailing list if they share our aims.

Pope Leo XIII's Prayer to St Michael

Holy Michael, Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust down to Hell Satan, and all wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen
