The Forty Martyrs

Today (4th May) is the feast of the Forty Martyrs. These forty are representative of the much larger number of Catholics executed, tortured to death, or dying in prison, for the Faith in the 16th and 17th Centuries. The Forty were canonised in 1970 by Pope Paul VI; many others are 'beati' and 'venerabili', and more are known only to God.

Pope Leo XIII's Prayer to St Michael

Holy Michael, Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust down to Hell Satan, and all wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen
